History has been revived in grand detail on the walls of Downtown Statesboro. Artists David Boatwright and Michael Kuffel from Lucky Boy Art have just finished a historic mural commissioned by the Bulloch County Historical Society on the wall of 48 East Main Street facing Statesboro City Hall. The mural, entitled “The Fabulous Fifty of 1906” or “December 2, 1906” as another working title, depicts the return of the delegation of 50 men from Bulloch County who traveled to Savannah on Dec. 1, 1906 for a bid session hosted by Gov. Joseph M. Terrell that would determine which community would become home to First District Agricultural and Mechanical School. The group returned by train to Statesboro the following day to a joyous crowd who had all come to celebrate their victory in solidifying Statesboro as the governor’s selection. One can only imagine the astonishment that crowd would have felt had they known how First District A&M would transform and soar into our hearts as the Georgia Southern University that we all know and love.
